How To Make The Most Out Of Your Laundry
Benefits, Suggestions & Tips To Improve Your Home
The Laundry…
Let’s talk about laundry layout. The laundry is often an ignored room in the home, but is actually one of the hardest working spaces in your house.
Creating an organised and functional laundry layout, that makes the most of your available space, can make it a room you’ll actually want to spend time in.
The laundry serves not only as a space for washing and preparing clothes but can also acts as a storage area and occasionally as a mud room. As a multifunctional area within the home, it is essential for the laundry to be practical, functional, and organised, regardless of its size.
Some Tips When Designing A Laundry
Whether you are renovating, building a new home, or simply updating your existing laundry, these straightforward tips will assist you in creating a clever, functional space that you will appreciate for years to come.
Maximise Your Bench Space
Don't underestimate the importance of bench space in a laundry. This space allows you to sort, store and fold clothes in the laundry, rather than bringing that task into other areas of your home.
If you don't have room for a lot of bench space, positioning the washing machine and dryer beneath the bench, as opposed to stacking these appliances can be helpful.
Design Tip: In addition to bench space, adding drying racks or places to hand wet or dry clothing inside your laundry can be a great value add.
Zone Your Workspace
There are generally three work areas within the laundry, (Sorting, Washing & Drying, and Ironing/Folding/Hanging). When thinking about layout, these areas should be clearly divided so that you can easily work within each allocated zone.
Placing your washing equipment strategically can help improve the workflow. If possible ensure that your washing machine, dryer, sink and bench top are in close proximity in your laundry design, so that dirty laundry can go straight from the sink to the washing machine and then through to drying and onto to folding on the bench top.
Mapping out these zones as part of your laundry renovation will help create a functional design.
Design Tip: If possible, think about locating your washing machine close to an exit point for easy access to your clothes line.
Maximise Storage & Organisation
Laundry cabinetry design should allow for maximum storage and be planned to create an organised room. Quality cabinetry can maximise organisation and storage in your existing space. Closed storage is an aesthetic way to keep items organised, accessible and out of sight.
Design Tip: Don't forget to include a broom and vacuum cupboard to store your house cleaning tools.
Making The Most Of Your Space
The size of laundries can often feel restricting, limiting the functionality and efficiency of the space; however, with the right layout, it is possible to create a highly functional area even in smaller confines.
Thinking about your non-negotiables and wants for your laundry will help you establish what you are wanting to achieve out of your space.
