Soil Testing & Why This is Required?

It is important to check the quality of the soil where you plan to renovate, before your construction work begins.

What is Soil Testing?

Soil testing, also known as soil classification is used to help determine soil properties at a construction suite and can be obtained by getting a geotechnical report (or soil test report).

As most buildings suffering movement problems are founded on clay soils, there is an emphasis on classification of soils according to the amount of swell and shrinkage they experience with variation of water content.

Purpose of Soil Testing

  • Soil testing is primarily conducted to test the bearing capacity and determine structure stabilisation.

  • The soil must have the ability to withstand the weight of the building.

  • The chemical and physical composition oft he soil is checked during this process.

  • Quality of soil depends upon various factors, such as weather, climate change and previous land usage.

Types of Soil Present

The types of soil usually present under the topsoil in land zones for residential dwellings can be split into two approximate groups - Granular and Clay.

General Problems Associated with Soil Types:

  • Soils with granular contents are associated with erosion.

  • Clay soils are subject to saturation and swell/shrink problems.

Why Is It Required?

Soil testing is required to establish an understanding of the soil conditions and determine if it is solid enough for construction, as well as help determine properties of the building itself.

Oztown Constructions can help you attain soil testing, along with all other relevant documentation.
